LOEFFLER, Charles
b Mulhouse, Alsace, 30 January 1861
d Medfield, Massachusetts, 19 May 1935, aged seventy-four

His father was a German writer and teacher. His studies in music were with private teachers in Switzerland and Germany. He emigrated to the USA in 1881, playing violin in orchestras, and becoming assistant leader of the Boston Symphony Orchestra until 1903. Then he decided to devote himself to teaching and composing. He became Officier de l'Academie in 1906 and Chevalier de Legion d'honneur in 1919. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in music from Yale University in 1926.
