LECLAIR, Jean-Marie

By the age of nineteen he had mastered violin playing, dancing and lacemaking! At the same age, in 1716, he married, while working as a dancer at the Lyons Opera. Under wealthy patronage he went in 1723 to Paris. His wife died and he remarried in 1730, to Louise Roussel, who engraved all his subsequent works. From

1733 to 1737 he was appointed by Louis XV as Ordinaire de la Musique du Roi; then he went to the court of Orange in the Netherlands, spending three months there in every year from 1738 to 1743. On returning permanently to Paris he remained for a few years in semi-retirement, teaching and composing. In 1748 he was called into the service of the Duke of Gramont, holding this position until, for reasons unknown, he was murdered.
