KURTAG, Gyorgy
b Lugoj, Romania, 19 February 1926

A Hungarian of Romanian birth, he entered Budapest Academy of Music in 1946, taking diplomas in composition, piano and chamber music in 1955. In 1957 he studied with Milhaud and Messiaen at the Paris Conservatory. He became coach and tutor at the Bartok Secondary Music School from 1958 to 1963, and was with the National Philharmonia from 1960 to 1968. In 1967 he was appointed to the staff of Budapest Academy.
