IPPOLITOF-IVANOF, Michail Michailovitch
b Gatchina, near St Petersburg, 19 November 1859
d Moscow, 28 January 1935, aged seventy-five

He was a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov in St Petersburg. He made his debut in St Petersburg as composer and conductor in 1883, then spent the next ten years as head of the Conservatory in Tiflis. After the revolution he became director of the Moscow Conservatory, and in 1935 was appointed conductor of the Moscow Opera.
