He first trained in Copenhagen and then in 1933 embarked on a tour to study Romanian folk music, returning to Denmark in 1934. He taught at the Danish Institute for the Blind in the 1940s, and was music critic of a Copenhagen daily newspaper from 1947 to 1950. In the early 1950s he joined the staff of the Copenhagen Conservatory, where he was appointed professor of composition in 1955.
