GRETRY, Andre
b Liege, 11 February 1741
d Montmorency, near Paris, 29 September 1813, aged seventy-two

His early training was as a chorister. From 1760 to 1766 he was attached to the Liege College in Rome. In 1767 he moved to Geneva, then to Paris. He wrote operas memorable for their tenderness and humour, achieving his peak in 1780; his more tragic works were less well received. In later years he wrote less music and more literature. He lost his wife and three daughters and spent his last years in isolation, dying in comparative obscurity.
