His father was a Cuban serving in the Spanish Army. He won a scholarship at the age of sixteen while living in Barcelona, supporting himself as a cafe pianist. Private patronage sent him to Paris, but ill-health prevented his entering the Conservatory. He studied privately for two years, then returned to Barcelona, where he settled and married. In 1901 he founded his own piano school. He and his wife attended the first performance of his opera Goyescas in New York, but on the return journey his ship, the Sussex, was torpedoed by a German submarine on the Folkestone-Dieppe crossing, and he was drowned while trying to save his wife.
