FRANCK, Cesar
b Liege, 10 December 1822
d Paris, 12 November 1890, aged sixty-seven

He and his brother showed marked musical gifts at an early age and were sent to the Liege Conservatory When he was twelve he had already completed his first tour as a pianist with his violinist brother. In 1837 he entered the Paris Conservatory, and did concert tours in 1842 to 1843. He settled down to teaching, which was an unceasing round of drudgery for the rest of his life travelling to pupils on weekdays, and working as an organist and choirmaster at weekends. In 1872 he was made professor of organ at the Conservatory where his pupils included d'Indy, Chausson and Pierné. He died as a result of being knocked down by a horse omnibus.
