ENESCO, Georges

He began studying violin at the age of four, and at seven went to the Vienna Conservatory. At thirteen he entered the Paris Conservatory, studying with Massenet and Fauré. He made his debut as a composer at the age of sixteen, and won a first prize for violin in 1899. He was much in demand as a teacher, and one of his pupils was Yehudi Menuhin. He was made a member of the Romanian Academy in 1912. He resided in the USA for a time from 1946, returning to France not long before his death. He is generally known as the father of Romanian national music.
