DOWLAND, John
b London?, 1563
d London, 20/21 January 1626, aged sixty-three

Nothing is known of his early years. In 1580 he went to Paris as a servant of the English Ambassador, and while there he converted to Catholicism. In 1588 he became a bachelor of music at Christ Church, Oxford, and then began to travel all over Europe. In 1598 he was appointed lutenist to King Christian IV of Denmark, but was dismissed in 1606 after a financial battle. In 1612, back in England, he was appointed one of the King's James I Musicians for the Lute.
