DELIBES, Leo
b St Germain-du-Val, 21 February 1836
d Paris, 16 January 1891, aged fifty-four

He entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of twelve and, studying under Adam, obtained a first prize two years later. In 1853, at the age of seventeen, he became organist of St Pierre de Cahillot, and held many organist appointments subsequently. Also in 1853 he became accompanist at the Theatre Lyrique, holding that post for ten years. In 1863 he became accompanist at the Opera, rising to second chorus-master in 1865. By 1866 he could afford to spend the rest of his life composing.
