He was educated at the universities of Illinois (1953) and Michigan (1959) He was awarded the Fulbright Fellowship, the Koussevitzky Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Pulitzer Prize of 1968. He was on the faculty of the University of Colorado from 1959 to 1964, professor at the University of Pennsylvania from 1965, and visiting professor at Harvard in 1968 and at Tanglewood in 1970.
