b Lucca, 19 June 1854
d Milan, 7 August 1893, aged thirty-nine

In his youth he was closely associated with Boito. From 1871 he studied in Paris, where he was much influenced by Gounod and Bizet. His misfortune as an opera writer was in his bad librettists.
