BRIAN, Havergal

b Dresden, Staffordshire, 29 January 1876

d Shoreham, Sussex, 28 November 1972, aged ninety-six

At the age of fifteen he was organist at the local church. He became apprenticed to a joiner, and then a representative for timber merchants. He was self-taught in composition, and befriended Elgar and Bantock. In 1912 he moved to London, but was very unsuccessful and destitute. In 1918 he became assistant editor of the Musical Opinion, staying in this post until 1939 and writing magazine articles.
