BOIELDIEU, François Adrien
b Rouen 16 December 1775
d Jarcy, near Paris, 8 October 1834 aged fifty-eight

He studied music locally. The libretti of his first two operas were written by his father. At the age of twenty he went to Paris, where he soon received commissions for other operas. In 1798 he became professor of piano at the Paris Conservatory, and studied counterpoint with Cherubini. In 1803 he was appointed conductor of the Imperial Opera in St Petersburg, staying there for eight years. He returned to Paris in 1817 as professor of composition at the Conservatory.
