NAXOS: CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SUCCESS

"It’s a combination of price, quality, distribution and marketing. Of course, at the beginning it was only the price, but now it’s the breadth and depth of repertoire we release, the excellent marketing, the promotion, and, of course, the fact that we self-distribute." Klaus Heymann

Select Music is delighted to announce another milestone in the history of Naxos: the 18th birthday of "the world’s favourite classical label" BBC Music Magazine. During its 18 years Naxos has recorded over 2,500 classical CDs, and has sold over 100 million CDs worldwide. High critical acclaim (including over 650 3-star recommendations in the Penguin Guide and over 100 Gramophone Editor’s Choices) has secured the label’s reputation as one of the most significant tours de force in the classical music industry.

To celebrate Naxos’ 18th birthday, Select Music will be unveiling a series of activities. For six months, from May to October 2005, every CD of the Month will be packaged together with a free limited edition birthday CD. Each of the birthday CDs takes its theme from the CD of the Month and will include a cross-section of key recordings in the Naxos catalogue.

MAY 2005 The first limited edition CD of the Month is a recording of Stainer’s The Crucifixion with the Choir of Clare College Cambridge under Timothy Brown. Following their best-selling performance of Rutter’s Requiem two years ago, Naxos is delighted to welcome back this excellent choir. Their performance of this meditation on Christ’s Crucifixion is one of great depth and emotion and one that should win many fans. The disc is coupled with the first free birthday CD, a compilation of some of the best English choral music in the Naxos catalogue: English Choral Classics includes full highlights from our prestigious St John’s Cambridge series, probably the most important survey of 20th century choral music to date, as well as performances by the Elora Festival Singers and St. George’s Chapel Choir. Composers featured include Elgar, Finzi, Stanford, Britten, Howells and Vaughan Williams.

JUNE 2005 Our CD of the Month for June is a disc of Thomas Tallis’ music with the sumptuous 40-part motet Spem in Alium as its centrepiece. Performed by the excellent Oxford Camerata under Jeremy Summerly, this disc has been specially released to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Tallis’ birth. Recorded in surround sound, this is a dazzling performance of one of the great landmarks of polyphony. The birthday CD accompanying this release – Early Sacred Classics – is a considered yet popular selection of music from this golden age of the arts and includes such favourites as the Allegri Miserere, Albinoni Adagio and Pachelbel Canon.

JULY 2005 20th Century British Music is one of Naxos’ flagship series. The entire series was honoured in the 1999 Gramophone Awards and continues to receive high plaudits. It was therefore essential to include a 20th Century British release in our 18th birthday celebrations and the result is a disc of Alwyn’s Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 with Peter Donohoe, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and James Judd. Released to celebrate the centenary of Alwyn’s birth, these are magnificent performances of these weighty yet romantic works. The birthday CD that accompanies this release – British Classics – includes Walton’s Spitfire Prelude and Fugue, part of Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto, and movements from Elgar’s Symphony No. 3 and Holst’s The Planets.

AUGUST 2005 August sees the release of Kurt Weill’s Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 performed by the distinguished Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Marin Alsop. Part of our renowned and adventurous 20th Century American Classics series, this disc follows on from the same artists’ triumphal recording of Adams’ Shaker Loops. The birthday CD that accompanies this disc – American Classics – includes critical highlights from composers such as Adams, Barber, Bernstein, Joplin and Cage, performed, as always, by our top artists.

SEPTEMBER 2005 Our September CD of the Month is Stokowski’s arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition. Performed once more by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, this time under the baton of José Serebrier, this recording has an added note of authenticity as Serebrier was Stokowski’s Associate Conductor for many years. The birthday CD – Russian Romantic Classics is a delicious collection of works with a popular folk feel including Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumble Bee and Shostakovich’s much loved Jazz Suite No. 1 from the Russian State Symphony Orchestra under Dmitry Yablonsky.

OCTOBER 2005 Our final birthday CD of the Month is released in October and is a magnificent performance of Mozart’s Requiem performed by the Gewandhaus Choir under Schuldt-Jensen. The birthday CD that accompanies it – Grand Choral Classics – includes music from Tippett’s Child of Our Time, Hummel’s Missa Solemnis and a chorus from our fabulous Bach St John Passion with New College Choir under Edward Higginbottom.
