This fifth volume of the Kooiman series includes the second part of the Orgelbuchlein, a collection of organ chorales, as well as two preludes and fugues, the majestic Pastorale BWV 590, and a few miscellaneous works.

Opening with the F minor prelude and fugue, this disc gets off to a slow start. Kooiman chooses dense registrations for this work, and the slow tempo makes it wooden and uninspiring. Fortunately, Kooiman’s readings of the Orgelbuchlein chorales are well judged. As in the first volume, which contained more than half of the chorales in the collection, his subtle registrations and delicate playing present each voice and texture clearly.

The E minor prelude and fugue is more lively and energetic than the F minor which opens the disc. The following chorales are played with the same attention to detail as the Orgelbuchlein chorales. But the high point of this recording is the F major pastorale, a long (more than eleven minute) work, it is actually in four parts: an opening pastorale, a musette, an air and a gigue. Bach wrote this work like a small suite, and, while the date of composition is unknown, the style suggests a work from Bach’s Weimar period. Kooiman again adopts an unhurried tempo for the opening section, and the second part is livelier. His registrations are light and airy, adding to the pastoral tone of the work. He maintains the mellow tempo but uses a brighter registration for the third section, maintaining this for the final gigue. The overall tone fits perfectly with the style of the piece.

This disc features a fine performance of the chorales, and, in spite of one prelude and fugue that doesn’t work very well, is more than saved by the excellent pastorale. Yet another very good recording in this complete set.
