2008 is the 30th anniversary of the most prestigious classical
music competition for young people in the UK.
BBC Young Musician of the Year was established in 1978 and
attracted
from the beginning,
outstanding musical talents. Many of the winners and finalists
have gone on to have major careers, among them Stephen Hough,
Barry Douglas, Michael Collins, Nicholas Daniel, Emma Johnson,
Tasmin Little, Leon McCawley and David Pyatt.
Some 360 musicians have been auditioned over the last four months
for the 2008 competition and eight have been short-listed in each
category. The competition is run by BBC Wales - the BBC's
home for classical music competitions including the biennial BBC
Cardiff Singer of the World.
Details of The
Young Musician of the Year
competition broadcasts are yet to be confirmed but will
include coverage on BBC Two, BBC Four, BBC Wales, Radio 3, Radio
Wales, Radio Cymru and online.
The Dates for the competition's semi-finals, category finals
and final have just been released and are as follows;
Category Semi-Finals
Tuesday 18 December : Woodwind
Wednesday 19 December : Brass
Thursday 20 December : Percussion
Friday 21 December : Keyboard
Category Finals
Wednesday 20 February : Woodwind
Thursday 21 February : Brass
Friday 22 February : Percussion
Saturday 23 February: Keyboarf
Competition Final
A winner will be chosen on each night of the
Category Finals who will go forward to the Competition Final
on 10th and 11th of May at the Wales Millennium Centre,
Cardiff, where the winners will perform with the BBC National
Orchestra of Wales conducted by Thierry Fischer.
