GEORGE BUTTERWORTH
(1885-1916)

Born in London. Educated at Eton and Oxford, he completed his musical training at the Royal College of Music under Walter Parratt, Cecil Sharpe and Charles Wood. Along with Sharpe and Vaughan Williams he was an enthusiastic participant in the folk song revival movement and his surviving orchestral works as well as his songs all reflect this. Before leaving for the front he destroyed the manuscripts of a number of his aleady completed works. Despite his life being cut short by his death in World War I he has managed to secure a place in the pantheon of English composers.

Born in Stourport, Worcestershire. He studied with Granville Bantock at the Birmingham and Midland Institute of Music. He worked as a piano accompanist and conductor and taught at the Royal College of Music and at several other schools. He composed a substantial amount of music of all types but destroyed much of his early output. His surviving orchestral output is basically of small-scale pieces though he did compose a Cello Concerto.

ERIC COATES

Born in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. He was taught at the Royal Academy of Music by Frederick Corder, Lionel Tertis and Hartley Braithwaite. He was an accomplished violist and conductor and became very famous as one of England’s most popular composers of light orchestral music and songs. His suites, waltzes, fairy tale ballets and marches have maintained their places in the recorded repertoire to this day. The London Suite is probably his most characteristic and often-played work.

Some other orchestral works are a Concert Overture in E minor, In the Cathedral and Sorrowful Dance.
