ZEMLINSKY, Alexander von

d Larchmont, New York, 15 March 1942, aged seventy

He studied at the Vienna Conservatory, and became the teacher of Webern, and of Schoenberg, who married his sister Mathilde. He was Kapellmeister at the Carltheater in Vienna in 1899, at the Hofoper from 1906 to 1926 and at the Kroll Opera in Berlin from 1927 to 1930. He toured widely as a conductor. In 1938 he moved to Prague and then, with the outbreak of war, on to the USA.
