TANSMAN, Alexandre

He studied music at the Lodz Conservatory from 1912 to 1914, and also law and philosophy at Warsaw University. In 1919 he went to Paris and befriended Ravel, Milhaud and Honegger. He made his first tour AS a pianist in 1927 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Koussevitzky, later touring extensively in Europe, Canada and Palestine. He began to conduct his own works, and from 1932 to 1933 travelled to the Far East. During World War II he lived in the USA, writing film music and giving concerts. He was awarded the Coolidge Medal in 1941, and returned to France in 1946.

Tansman has also written many songs, chamber and piano works, and incidental music for theatre, cinema and radio.
