d Port Clinton, Ohio, 7 July 1968, aged seventy-three

He studied piano, theory and organ in Chicago. During World War I he served in the Army as a bandmaster. In 1921 he received the Prix de Rome, which enabled him to spend three years in Italy. He returned to Chicago to teach composition at the American Conservatory from 1925 to 1962, and was also organist and choirmaster at St James' Cathedral from 1927 to 1962. In 1946 he won the Pulitzer Prize.
