b Brand, Bavaria, 19 March 1873
d Leipzig, 11 May 1916, aged forty-three

He was the son of a teacher. He studied music privately, and in 1901 went to Munich as a pianist, teacher and an already established composer. In 1907 he became a professor at the Leipzig Conservatory, staying there for the rest of his life. In 1911 he was appointed director of the court orchestra at Meiningen, but in 1914 he relinquished the post and retired to Jena to write. Excessive indulgence in food and drink resulted in the heart attack that killed him.
