His father was a piano teacher. Pizzetti attended the Reggio Emilia Gymnasium and in 1895 was enrolled at Parma University, remaining there for six years. His life was spent chiefly in educational posts; after teaching in Parma he moved in 1908 to Florence, becoming director at the Instituto Musicale Cherubini from 1917 to 1924. In 1924 he was appointed director of the Milan Conservatory, then he moved to Rome, to take the chair of composition at the Academia Sta Cecilia from 1936 until his retirement in 1960.
