PIERNÉ, Henri Constant Gabriel

d Morlaix, 27 July 1937, aged seventy-three

He became a pupil at the Paris Conservatory at the age of eight, studying under Franck and Massenet. In 1882 he won the Prix de Rome. He succeeded Franck as organist at Ste Cecile from 1890 to 1898. In 1903 he became assistant conductor of the Concerts Colonne, then first conductor from 1910 to 1932. In 1925 he was elected a member of the Institut Français.
