MIASKOVSKY, Nikolai
b Novogeorgievsky, 20 April 1882
d Moscow, 9 August 1950, aged sixty-nine

He was born into a military family, and fought for the Russian Army from 1914 to 1916. In 1908 he won a scholarship to the Conservatory of St Petersburg, where he studied under Rimsky-Korsakov and Liadov. After World War I he became professor of composition at the Conservatory of Moscow.
