MALIPIERO, Gian Francesco
b Venice, 18 March 1882
d Treviso, 1 August 1973, aged ninety-one
Though both his father and his grandfather were musicians he showed no early interest in music. At the age of fourteen he attended classes in harmony at the Vienna Conservatory, and became engrossed in the subject. He married the daughter of a Venetian artist in 1910 and settled down to a life of composition. An authority on early Italian music, his horizons suddenly broadened on hearing Stravinsky's Rite of Spring in Paris in 1913. He wrote most of the libretti for his own operas. The traumas caused by World War II inhibited his work, and he took a considerable time to recover. His last years were spent privately, studying old music.
