LALO, Edouard

d Paris, 12 April 1892, aged sixty-nine

He trained as a string player at the Lille and Paris Conservatories, making a living by teaching and playing in a string quartet. In 1865 he married a singer who encouraged him to write for the stage, but the advent of the Franco-Prussian war made production impossible. His works had a mixed reception until his opera Le Roi d'Ys became a popular success in 1888.
