b Ossining, New York, 23 June 1928
A graduate of the Juillard School , he also studied with Copland, and with Otto Luening. He received Fulbright grants to Italy and to New Zealand, two Guggenheim Fellowships, Ford Foundation Fellowships, a Gold medal in the Queen Elizabeth International Competition and many other awards. He was a professor at the State University of New York from 1964 to 1971 and from 1971 until 1995 was Professor of Composition at the University of Texas at Austin and recently a Visiting Professor of Music at Williams College. He is now retired from teaching and lives in Cambridge, N.Y.
