He studied at the Liege Conservatory, winning the Prix de Rome in 1897. From 1891 to 1898 he was assistant professor of counterpoint at Liege, becoming professor of harmony in 1903. He lived in England during World War I, and in 1919 resumed his teaching post in Liege. In 1920 he became professor of counterpoint and fugue at the Brussels Conservatory, and was director there until 1939.
