HAMILTON, Iain

d London 28 July 2000, aged seventy-eight
He moved to London at the age of seven, attending Mill Hill School, and first worked in engineering for seven years. In 1947 he won a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, gaining there the Koussevitsky Foundation award and the Royal Philharmonic Society, Edwin Evans Memorial and Dove prizes. He became a lecturer at Morley College and London University. In 1961 he lectured at Duke University, North Carolina, and in 1962 became the Mary Duke Biddle professor there; he was also chairman of the music department from 1966 to 1967. In 1970 he received an honorary doctorate of music from Glasgow University.
