HALEVY, (original name Elias Levy) Jacques Francois Fromenhl

He studied with Cherubini at the Paris Conservatory from 1809. In 1819 he won the Grand Prix de Rome, and while in Rome wrote an opera and some church music. He taught at the Paris Conservatory from 1827, becoming professor of composition in 1840; his pupils included Gounod and Bizet. From 1830 to 1845 he was chorus-master at the Opera. He was elected to the Institut Francais in 1836, and from 1854 was the permanent secretary to the Academie des Beaux Arts, in which post he wrote many eulogical essays.
