He was an organ scholar at Queens' College, Cambridge and in 1958 was given a scholarship to the Juillard School. He worked as a pianist with the New York City Ballet, and as a critic and lecturer. From 1962 to 1970 he held various lectureships in London and Birmingham, finally resigning to work freelance. In 1974 he was made the first professor of music at Keele University.
