COOKE, Arnold
b Gomersal, near Leeds, 4 November 1906

He was educated at Repton School, and Cambridge. From 1929 until 1932 he was a pupil of Hindemith at the Hochschule fur Musik in Berlin. He then became director of music at the Festival Theatre, Cambridge, and was appointed professor of harmony and composition at the Royal Manchester College from 1933 to 1938. He served with the Royal Navy during World War II. He was appointed professor of harmony and composition at Trinity College of Music in 1947 and received his doctorate in music at Cambridge in 1948.
