He began violin lessons at the age of six and then took up the viola, playing in amateur orchestras. In 1906 he entered the Royal Academy of Music and studied viola under Tertis. After gaining experience in theatre orchestras, he played viola in the major British symphony orchestras. As a composer, he concentrated on writing light music.
