He studied law at the University of Paris and then entered the Conservatory, as a pupil of Massenet, for composition, and Franck, for organ; after a few months he withdrew from the Conservatory and became a private pupil of Franck. His house became a rendezvous for the well-known musicians, writers and painters of the day. His great friend was Debussy, whom he often helped financially. He was killed in a bicycling accident while on holiday.
