He was educated at Latymer Upper School, Hammersmith. After National Service in Hong Kong, where he learned Chinese, he read music at Gonville ancl Caius College, Cambridge, from 1957 to 1960. He studied in East Berlin in 1960-1, then returned to England to teach for two years before going to the University of York as Granada arts fellow (1963-4) In 1964 he was appointed lecturer there and promoted to professor in 1976.
