His mother was a pupil of Holst. In 1953 he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Lennox Berkeley. In 1958 he was awarded a French government scholarship and went to Paris for two years, studying with Boulez. He was awarded the Arnold Bax Society Prize in 1964 and the Ralph Vaughan Williams Award for Composer of the Year in 1965. In 1970/1 he was composer-in-residence at the Peabody Institute, Baltimore.
