LILIAN
ELKINGTON (1901-69) Born
in Birmingham. She studied composition and piano with Granville Bantock at the
Birmingham Midland Institute and also studied the organ. After getting married
in 1926, she retired from composition but continued ia limited musical career
as an organist. The work listed below was rediscovered after her death by the
musicologist David J. Brown. Out of the Mist (tone poem) (1921) David

FINZI (1901-1956) Born
in London. As a teenager he studied privately with Ernest Farrar and Edward Bairstow
and then in his next decade took counterpoint with R.O. Morris. He joined
the staff of the Royal Academy of Music but kept this post only for 3 years before
relocating to Berkshire where he devoted most of the rest of his life to composing.
He was the founder and conductor of the Newbury String Players. His catalogue
is made up of choral, vocal and orchestral works, including a Cello and Clarinet
Concerto that have become very popular in recent years. He is considered one of
England’s greatest composers of art songs. Other large-scale orchestra
works such as a Symphony and Piano Concerto were started but never completed.

SIR WILLIAM WALTON (1902-1983)
Born
in Oldham, Lancashire. Studied at Oxford but was basically self-taught in composition.
Had the patronage of the highly influential Sitwell family and achieved early
fame with his settings of Edith Sitwell’s "Façade." His early
unconventionality of style later turned conservative and he developed into one
of the leading composers in the accepted British tradition. He wrote marches for
the coronations of George VI and Elizabeth II that were worthy successors to the
marches of Elgar and brilliant scores for the Shakespearean films of Sir Laurence
Olivier. His major orchestral works are his 2 Symphonies, Sinfonia Concertante
for Piano and Orchestra and Concertos for Violin, Viola and Cello. See

in London into an artistic family. He studied at the Royal College of Music
where his teachers included Malcolm Sargent, George Dyson, R.O. Morris and Vaughan
Williams. While still a student at this school he was commissioned to write a
ballet for Diaghilev. He became very well known as a conductor, musicologist and
as a very influential and oft-quoted author. His compositional catalogue was not
particularly extensive. In addition to the ballets, his major works include 2
Piano Concertos, some short orchestral pieces, film scores and the choral "Summer’s

in Wimbledon. He studied under E.J. Dent at Cambridge and went for further lessons
in Berlin with Paul Hindemith. After turning down a teaching position, he earned
a living in the 1930’s by writing for the theater and films, accepting commissions
for pantomimes, revues, comic operas and incidental music. He was killed in action
during World War II and left only a small body of work both for the theater and
concert hall. His other orchestral works have been recorded and there are also
a few chamber works, solo piano pieces and songs. See

RONALD
BINGE (1910-1979) Born
in Derby. He had some piano lessons but was basically self-taught, getting most
of his early experience on the job accompanying silent movies. He became one of
the leading composers, conductors and arrangers of light orchestral music and
worked for many years with Mantovani. The Saturday Symphony was his only large-scale
work but his Saxophone Concerto, Scottish Rhapsody and Elizabethan Serenade are
more ambitious examples of his usual type of piece. See
BSCD for: Saturday Symphony. See
BCCD for: Alto Saxophone Concerto.
