HAVERGAL
BRIAN
(1876-1972)
Born
in Dresden, Staffordshire. Except for
some instrumental lessons by local teachers,
Britain’s most prolific symphonist was
basically self-taught. He composed incessantly
throughout his long life but only saw
his music discovered when he was in
his eighties. Prior to the 32 numbered
Symphonies he wrote a "Fantastic
Symphony" in 1907 that was later
broken up to become "Fantastic
Variations on an Old Rhyme" and
"Festal Dance." For orchestra
his other works include a Cello Concerto,
5 English Suites (one is lost) and 3
Comedy Overtures.

in Richmond Gardens, London. He studied
at the Royal College of Music with Charles
Stanford, Algernon Ashton and Edward
Dannreuther. After graduation he conducted
various orchestras and taught at the
Croydon Conservatoire of Music and later
very briefly at the RCM. He composed
mostly for chamber groups leaving only
several works for orchestra including
a fairy tale suite "The Magic Mirror,"
Variations on an Original Theme and
Variations on a Hungarian Air.

(1878-1960)
Born
in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Studied
at the Royal College of Music with Charles
Stanford and Henry Walford Davies (1869-1941,
composed a Symphony in G major and a
Children’s Symphony). In addition to
teaching, his musical career basically
revolved around the composition and
performances of his operas. His attempt
to establish an English operatic cycle
similar to Wagner was unsuccessful.
He also wrote a 2nd Oboe
Concerto, 3 Symphonies and symphonic
poems.

JOSEF
HOLBROOKE
(1878-1958)
Born
in Croydon. He studied at the Royal
Academy of Music with Frederick Westlake
and Frederick Corder. His musical career
began with time spent in music halls
as a pianist and conductor and he supplemented
his income as a music critic. He eventually
had success as a conductor and pianist
but his compositions never really made
a breakthrough. His catalogue was vast
and included operas, symphonies, large-scale
symphonic poems based on the works of
Edgar Allan Poe and much else in all
genres. He wrote several other Concertos:
Piano Concerto no. 2 (1928), Violin
Concerto (1917), Cello Concerto (1936),
Saxophone Concerto (1927) and 2 later
Concertos for various combinations of
instruments.

BRIDGE
(1879-1941)
Born
in Brighton. Studied with Charles Stanford
at the Royal College of Music. Bridge
was probably the most qualified British
composer who never wrote a symphony.
When he finally started one it was too
late. The fragment listed below was
arranged by Anthony Pople in 1979. Bridge
had a successful career as a conductor
and teacher and composed much music
of the highest quality. His major works
for orchestra include the suite "The
Sea," Dance Rhapsody, Dance Poem,
the tone poems "Isabella"
and "Summer" and the rhapsody
"Enter Spring."

(1879-1970)
Born
in Oxton, Cheshire. Went to Frankfurt
am Main at the age of 12 to study with
Engelbert Humperdinck and Lazarro Uzielli
and returned there for further study
with Iwan Knorr. He composed prolifically
in all genres during his long life and
had great success at an early stage.
This did not last and his music is only
starting to be revived at the present
time after many decades of obscurity.
He wrote 4 Symphonies, a Sinfonietta
for Strings, Organ and Harp and a Sinfonietta
for Strings, Concertos for Cello and
Harpsichord and other works for orchestra.

JOHN
FOULDS
(1880-1939)
Born
in Manchester. He learned the piano
and cello at a very young age and used
these skills to earn a living in theater
orchestras before joining the Hallé
Orchestra at the age of 20. He held
various musical director posts in London
before going to India in 1935 where
he immersed himself in the study of
Indian folk music while still engaged
as a conductor. His music has recently
emerged from obscurity and he is found
to have been a serious composer far
ahead of his own time and not just a
creator of light music. Much of his
extensive catalogue has been lost but
his 1st Cello Concerto (1911), a number
of still unrecorded orchestral works
and a World Requiem are still extant.

WOOD
(1882-1959)
Born
in Slaithwaite, Yorkshire. He was taught
the violin by his brother and went to
the Royal College of Music where Stanford
was one of his teachers. He was enormously
successful as a composer of light orchestral
music and popular songs. He spent some
years on the Isle of Man and wrote several
works that reflect the folk music of
the place. His other major serious orchestral
works are a Violin Concerto in B minor
(1932) and a Symphony in D minor (1908).
The latter work is presumably lost.

ARNOLD BAX
(1883-1953)
Born
in London. He studied at the Royal Academy
of Music with Frederick Corder and Tobias
Matthay. Coming from a wealthy background,
Bax needed no musical employment to
be able to pursue his creativity in
both music and literature. Beyond the
Concertos, he composed a large amount
of works for orchestra including 7 numbered
Symphonies and the early Symphony "Spring
Fire" as well as a series of tone
poems from which "Tintagel,"
"The Garden of Fand" and "November
Woods" are the most popular. He
was appointed Master of the King’s Musick

with Granville Bantock at the Birmingham
and Midland Institute of Music. He worked
as a piano accompanist and conductor
