Recorded February 2005

This original music composed and arranged by guitarist Chris Jentsch for full big band plus overdubbing, works a lot better than I would have imagined when I read the sleeve notes. I was expecting something really weird that I would not have a hope of understanding, but I found some new music that is both exceptionally well played and full of different musical shades. It also has the merit of having some real jazz feel about it.

Having spent some time in Brooklyn, I think that Chris has really caught the feeling of the place and transferred it into interesting musical terms. The feel of the big band is always there, but the soloists are able to meander freely throughout.

Chris’s own guitar work is always interesting and I was very impressed with the orchestra’s ability to interpret his exacting scores with such accuracy and vitality. They were certainly carrying no passengers on this session. It was interesting to note that the works had received financial support from a composer assistance programme: thankfully their money was not wasted in the way that much musical sponsorship goes!
