Peter Grant is a young Yorkshire born singer, whose stage act is based on the work of Harry Connick Jnr. He has a good voice, plenty of personality and strong desire to succeed in the world of popular music. The promotional copy of the record I have contains no information on the musicians who provide the very slick backings, which is a shame.

Whether this is a jazz album is debateable, but for sure the music has its roots in jazz, although there is little improvisation. Peter has a very pleasant voice and he phrases like a jazz singer, his delivery is relaxed and he has the poise of a much older and more experienced performer.

The only danger that I see for such a talented young man, is the artist managers who try to push singers, who want to be serious performers in the world of jazz, into the world of ‘pop’. Jamie Cullum is now to my mind someway along this route, his presentation skills have been polished, but his piano playing is not developing at the same rate. I am sorry that is happening because he has the potential to be a great jazz pianist.

The songs are a mixture of standards and new material all of which is delivered with a touch of real class. I hope he succeeds he deserves to.
