John Dank worth - Clarinet

Paul Hart - Violin

Jon Hiseman - Piano

John Mole - Bass Guitar

Robin Jones - Percussion

A somewhat unusual album this, bringing together some very outstanding musicians, in a collaboration which has a semi-classical feel with distinct jazz overtones. I am very familiar with the work of John Dankworth and Paul Hart and less familiar with the other musicians. John Dankworth of course, qualified as a classical clarinet player before embarking on a career in jazz. Sultry Sundeck has Ducal tones about it, it is in fact one of the Dankworth compositions, he wrote 1,4,5 & 8, whereas Argent wrote the others. Paul Hart demonstrates his amazing versatility by in this case playing violin throughout, which he does with great aplomb.

The music is very easy to listen to, I would even say it tends towards the JAZZ FM at times, although it has more jazz content than a lot of their stuff! The compositions all make good use of the very considerable musical talent on display, the atmosphere is joyful and I am sure it brought great satisfaction to the participants, but it did leave me wondering what market it was aimed at.
