Tom
Scott has experimented with all kinds of music
– playing for Don Ellis’s big band and exploring
everything from jazz fusion to world music
via smooth jazz. The album title here suggests
that he is returning to bebop, although the
music is actually more like straightforward
swinging modern jazz – and none the worse
for that. Phil Woods was brought in as a special
guest to enhance the bebop element and he
sounds boppish on Close View, although
his performance on Tom Scott’s composition
Silhouettes is a passionate reading
of a tender ballad, and his solo on Chick
Corea’s Tones for Joan’s Bones displays
his fluent invention in any idiom.
It’s
good to hear Ronnie Cuber’s forthright baritone
sax let loose on Sack o’ Woe and Close
View but all the soloists acquit themselves
well, including Tom Scott who solos with authority
on such tunes as Children of the Night
and Back Burner. The album was recorded
at the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild (in Pittsburgh,
not England) and the sound quality is excellent.
