Lynne Arriale – Piano
Jay Anderson – Bass
Steve Davies – Drums
Recorded in August 2002

There is a tradition of great female pianists in jazz, Mary Lou Williams was right in there with the bebop pioneers and recently Diana Krall has amazed us with her jazz playing as well as her singing. After hearing this CD, I am now convinced that there is another great female jazz talent around in Lynne Arriale.

That she was classically trained is obvious, she has technique to spare, but what she also has is a wonderful melodic sense and a great feeling for the timing of each note she plays. Her trio on this CD are excellent, Jay Andersen is a terrific bass player and it is obvious that drummer Steve Davies has played with the best.

Lynne’s previous CD with her trio was called Inspiration and it was No1 on the US jazz charts. This album is her eighth and I would like to hear all of them!

She is also a composer of note and tracks 3,5,7 and 8 are all her work. She has the magic knack of making every tune sound like it was written for her to perform and her empathy with the other members of the trio make them such an exciting combination. They build tension and let it away again in a way that keeps the listener on the edge of the seat.

I suspect that Lynne is not as well known in the UK as in her native USA, but take my word for it UK audience; this is an album to savour.
