Many would not regard Bing as a jazz singer, but
he came from a jazz background and was the brother of Bob Crosby,
whose band is to be heard on several tracks on this CD. As well as
having a very pleasant voice, I am convinced that it was the association
with the jazz scene in his early days that gave Bing his wonderful
timing.
There is not a lot to say about Bing that has not
already been said, as well as a very popular singer, he was an actor
of some note and appeared in many Hollywood films, the most famous
of which is probably High Society. This selection comes from the period
1939 to 1944, the period of the Second World War of course. He often
worked with jazz outfits at that time and there is a good selection
of famous jazzmen here. The Bob Crosby band includes jazz luminaries
as Yank Lawson, Eddie Miller, Muggsy Spanier and Jess Stacey. There
are also guest artists, The Andrews Sisters, Margaret Leonhardt, Judy
Garland and Bob Hope,
This album will be popular with the fans of ‘Der
Bingle’ but will also be popular with anyone who likes nice straightforward
well-produced music.
