Before Diana Krall became a household name, she made this CD with a band of Swiss musicians led by trombonist Vince Benedetti. She was working as a solo piano player/singer in the lounge of a hotel in Zurich. Vince Benedetti was working as a part-time taxi driver, a not unknown occupation for musicians who are between engagements. The two met when Diana hailed Vince’s cab and as a result of their conversation, he went to hear her play at the hotel. She agreed to do a short tour in 1989 with Vince’s Quartet, who at that time did not have a piano player, featuring songs and music written by Vince and his associates. After the tour was complete they made this CD. Unfortunately it was not released until last year, because the record companies were not interested!

Even at this time, it is clear that she was destined for great things, her piano playing and singing on this CD are excellent. The music Vince put together is also excellent, as are all the players in his Quartet. It must have been very frustrating for him to have to wait all this time for this music to be released to the world at large.

Diana is now of course an International Star, who can fill the largest concert halls in the world and she deserves all her success. I hope that this CD will help Vince Benedetti and his excellent quartet to fulfil some of their musical dreams as well.
