It has been said that the world's shortest book would be a listing of famous
Belgians! Toots managed it however and in some style he played guitar in
the bands of Benny Goodman and George Shearing and was featured on many of
the studio sessions organised by Quincy Jones. One of his compositions
'Bluesette' has become a jazz standard and is still in the repertoire of
many different groups. He has lived in the USA since the 50's but made regular
visits back to Europe. As well as being an expert guitar player, he also
plays the harmonica and whistles and although he does them all well, it is
his guitar playing that I find the most interesting. This album was made
during one of his brief European trips in 1961, it was made in a hurry and
it has that kind of sound about it. I don't think that this would rank as
being anywhere near his best work on guitar, even though the playing of the
whole group is very competent. Some of the guitar sounds remind me of Hank
Marvin with the Shadows. Nuff said!
