Before this record I had not heard Rhoda Scott, but Arthur Rubinstein had
and he said " A great, a very great virtuoso", and I wouldn't want to argue
with him. The beauty of the Hammond Organ is that in the right hands it can
produce such a wondrous array of sounds. These are the right hands and everything
is here from the tender 'It's Impossible' and 'What are you doing' to the
rumbustuous 'Speak Low' and 'Dolphin Street'.
Rhoda Scott started her musical education at Manhattan School of Music, before
progressing to study with Nadia Boulanger. Others had done so before her
including Tad Dameron and Quincy Jones. Drummers should listen to Kenny Clarke
at work here; the man was undoubtedly one of the greatest drummers the world
has ever produced. He listens carefully throughout, his dynamics rise and
fall with the soloist; he pushes things on but never jostles with the other
player. It is said that the two were very good friends and enjoyed working
together - It shows!
Why is the delectable Ms Rhodes still in France and not back home in the
USA? Well she married a certain Frenchman Raoul St.Yves and she is a Big
Name in continental Europe.
