CARLA GAVAZZI (1913-2008)
The Italian soprano Carla
Gavazzi died on Sunday 25th
May 2008 at the age of 95. Though her
brief career concluded about half a century
ago, her name has remained alive with
opera buffs on account of her impassioned
contributions to four Cetra opera sets
from the early 1950s, all of which I have
reviewed for MusicWeb:
Adriana
Lecouvreur, Don
Giovanni, La
Fanciulla del West, Pagliacci.
In the first of these
I gave such details as I knew of her career.
Adriana and Minnie, in particular, remain
fundamental to the discography of these
operas. I hope to be able to write about
this artist more fully at a later date.
Fanciulla was also
reviewed by Ian Lace, Don Giovanni
by
Robert J. Farr. A video of her Santuzza
in Cavalleria Rusticana, from a RAI television
production, has also been issued.
